Hands-On Learning in the Forest
Magness Memorial Tree Farm, located near Wilsonville, Oregon, is the perfect outdoor education site for school and youth groups. You can choose to go at your own pace and take a self-guided tour or get personalized attention with our Walks and Talks program designed to complement topics being studied in the classroom.

  • Most groups allow 2-3 hours for Walks and Talks programs, including lunch stop.
  • Reservations for day and overnight use of the Education Center, Outdoor Classroom (large shelter), and bunkhouse camping facilities can be made by calling 503-488-2147 or online at Bunkhouse Rentals.

Magness Walks and Talks

Group 10 or more under 18 years
Reservation Required Yes
Fee $5 per child. We require one adult for every 10 children, admitted at no charge. All additional chaperones are charged the group rate.

Enjoy a guided hike through the 80 acre internationally recognized Magness Memorial Tree Farm.  Multiple trails and lengths are available depending on your objective. Perfect for school or youth groups of all ages. Get an overview about forests, ecosystems, wildlife, tree farms, and learn about the Oregon Forest Plan.

All participants should be dressed for outdoor activities-rain or shine! This includes sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots and appropriate clothing, including rain gear if necessary. We suggest dressing in easy-to-add or shed layers to account for changes in temperature or exertion levels. Trails can be muddy and extra shoes or clothes in the car may be useful for the ride home.

We require a minimum 1:10 chaperone/student ratio and students must be accompanied by adults at all times.  

Forest Technologies- GPS (Global Positioning System)

We"ll take your students out of the traditional classroom setting and provide them with hands- on, relevant, practical, and memorable connections to modern forest management skills used by working forestry professionals. Learn how GPS works and how to collect your own GPS data. Also, a great tool for teaching about possible career options.

All participants should be dressed for outdoor activities-rain or shine! This includes sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots and appropriate clothing, including rain gear if necessary. We suggest dressing in easy-to-add or shed layers to account for changes in temperature or exertion levels. Trails can be muddy and extra shoes or clothes in the car may be useful for the ride home.

Combine the GPS and GIS classes for a 2 day trip to both Magness Memorial Tree Farm and the Discovery Museum.  Or, do it all in one longer day!

Enjoy a hands-on outdoor learning experience that can show your students the tools that built the foundation for modern forest technology. Let us teach your class how to use some traditional forestry equipment such as the Clinometer, D-Tape, Increment Borer, Compass, Biltmore Stick, and more!

Perfect for school or youth groups of all ages, we'll teach you how to identify native trees, shrubs, and plants while hiking through our 80 acre tree farm. If your group wishes, we can even introduce scientific names!

Sunday tours are great for families or small groups. Join our staff and volunteers for a fun and informative tour of the Magness property. You'll learn the history of Magness, some tree identification, as well as why sustainable forestry is so important. No reservations are necessary. We go rain or shine. Wear comfortable shoes and meet in the parking lot. Allow 90 minutes.

Bring your group, class, or club out to the tree farm for a fun day in the woods. Interpretive signs will help you learn about the forest and how it constantly changes. Shelters can be rented if you want to bring a picnic lunch.
