Tips for a Successful Visit to Magness Memorial Tree Farm
Answers to frequently asked questions to help you get the most out of your group visit.
Yes. Magness Memorial Tree Farm is open to the public 9am-5pm daily, and free tours are offered every Sunday at 2:00pm.
Our guided programs take approximately 1-½ hours to complete.
It takes about 15-30 minutes to finish the John Nagle Nature Trail, and the Woods Tour Trail takes about 60-90 minutes to hike.
We ask you to make your reservations at least two weeks in advance. To make reservations you can either submit them online at Book A Field Trip or Tour or contact us directly at 503-488-2147.
Our guided Walks & Talks tour can only accommodate up to 30 students at a time. We request that you divide large groups up prior to arrival and stagger their tour times, or request a second guide to be available.
There is a parking lot located at the entrance to Magness Memorial Tree Farm. There is limited space however, so carpooling is encouraged.
Children must be accompanied by adults at all times while at Magness Memorial Tree Farm. We require a minimum of one chaperone for every 10 students under age 18. For children under age 10, we suggest at least one chaperone for every 5 students.
Yes. Each of your students and chaperones should be clearly identified with name of school or group and the name of the supervising teacher or leader. Including student names is optional.
Yes. Please use only pencils and bring clipboards or cardboard backing for student worksheets. Cameras and videos are welcome. If you would like to rent our Edmund Hayes Education Center or our picnic shelter, please Book A Bunkhouse or contact our Education Department at 503-488-2147.
In most cases we can accommodate visitors with special needs. Please contact us at 503-488-2147 with specific questions.
Our large picnic shelter, located adjacent to the meadow, can be rented for day use. This shelter has picnic tables that can fit up to 75 guests, and also comes with the use of our outdoor grill. To reserve this area, Book A Bunkhouse or contact our Education Department at 503-488-2147.
Our Tree Farm Manager will meet you at the Edmund Hayes Education Center at the time of your visit to help you check in and get started with your tour.
Please send your payments prior to arrival to the World Forestry Center in the prepaid envelopes provided with your program confirmation.
Call group reservations at 503-488-2147 with any changes, cancellations, or questions. Last minute and day-of-visit changes can be phoned-in directly to Magness Memorial Tree Farm at 503-625-7471. Please, leave a voice mail if line is busy or after hours.
Toilets and drinking fountains are located at the education center and outhouses are located both in the meadow and near the parking lot. Plan ahead-there are no restrooms on the trails!
All participants should be dressed for outdoor activities-rain or shine! This includes sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots and appropriate clothing, including rain gear if necessary. We suggest dressing in easy-to-add or shed layers to account for changes in temperature or exertion levels. Trails can be muddy and extra shoes or clothes in the car may be useful for the ride home.
No. However, Magness Tree Farm is home to many different kinds of wildlife. Some animals or insects can potentially carry harmful disease or poisons. As with all wildlife, visitors should keep a safe distance. If you encounter hurt or injured wildlife, do not go near it! Notify the tree farm manager immediately.
Yes! Staying on the trails helps protect sensitive plants and animals. Also, the trails are maintained and cleared of poisonoak (Rhus divirsiloba). Going off trail increases your risk of contact with this plant.
To visit Magness Memorial Tree Farm take I-5 to exit 283. Turn West on Wilsonville Road. Drive 4 miles to Edminston Road. Turn Right on Edminston Road. Travel 1.3 miles to SW Ladd Hill Road. Turn Right on SW Ladd Hill Road and it's only a half mile down the hill to the tree farm. Follow signs to parking lot.
Can we bring home souvenirs? Please do not pick plants or flowers without the Tree Farm Managers presence and approval. Many plants can be harmful and should not be handled. Other plants are sensitive and after being picked may not return to the spot for up to 7 years!
