SUMMARY:Forest Pub: Painted Forests\, Hidden Data
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE TICKETS HERE!\nCan art history support forest-science research? If yes\, what can 19th-century landscape paintings reveal about forests of the past? In this Forest Pub\, Oregon State University forest-scientists Dana Warren and Harper Loeb explore how historic artworks serve as unexpected sources of ecological data. By examining the balance between observation and artistic license\, their work uncovers new ways to understand long-term forest change. \nJoin us for an evening where art meets science\, revealing how early landscape paintings can deepen our understanding of past ecosystems and inspire new approaches to forest stewardship today. Part of a program series for World Forestry Center’s newest temporary art exhibition\, Forest Hope Through Innovation\, this event brings together science\, creative practice\, and community knowledge. \nForest Pubs invites the public to gather and ask questions\, share perspectives\, and consider what it means to care for forests in a time of rapid change. Bring your curiosity and your care for the landscapes we call home. \nAbout our speakers: \n\n\nDana Warren is an Associate Professor within the Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society\, College of Forestry at Oregon State University. He studies aquatic ecosystems and has broad research interests that encompass fish\, ecosystems\, forests\, invertebrates\, biogeochemistry\, historical ecology\, and restoration.\n\n\n\n\nHarper Loeb is the Hands on the Land Project Coordinator for the Oregon State University Extension Fire Program. She holds a Master of Science in Forest Ecosystems and Society from Oregon State University and a Master of Arts in Art History from the University of Oregon. Her research focuses on historical ecology\, fire history\, and collaborative approaches to forest management.

SUMMARY:Eras
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE TICKETS HERE\n\n\n\n\n\nWorld Forestry Center is honored to partner with Oregon Repertory Singers Youth Choir and Third Angle New Music to present Eras—a world premiere wildfire oratorio exploring the intersection of past\, present\, and future for both people and planet. \nThe creative journey of Eras began in April 2025\, when students from the ORS Youth Choir and Third Angle Ensemble visited our exhibit Following Fire\, a powerful collaboration between photographer David Paul Bayles and ecologist Frederick J. Swanson. Guided by Bayles and Swanson\, the students reflected on images of charred landscapes and the resilient signs of regrowth. Inspired by their experience\, the students wrote original poetry while seated on the exhibit floor—poetry that later became the source text for composers Iman Habibi\, Michael-Thomas Foumai\, and Kirsten Volness. Their resulting oratorio for youth choir and small ensemble now stands as the heart of this moving program. \nPurchase Tickets here\nROSTER: \n\nSarah Tiedemann\, flute\nRicky Smith\, clarinet\nLing-Ling Huang\, violin\nValdine Ritchie Mishkin\, cello\nChris Whyte\, perc\nSusan DeWitt Smith\, piano\n\nPROGRAM: \n\nIman Habibi\, Michael-Thomas Foumai\, Kirsten Volness\, New Work\, title TBD\nSarah Kirkland Snider\, You Are Free\nKenji Bunch\, Ralph's Old Records\nDavid Lang\, Sweet Air\nYouth Choir pieces\, hopefully including Jerod Tate\, We Are the Storm

SUMMARY:Forest Pub: Emerald Ash Borers
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE!\n\n\n\n\n\nAn invasive shiny beetle is threatening Oregon’s ash trees—and the ecosystems that depend on them. \nEmerald ash borer (EAB)\, an invasive shiny-green jewel beetle native to north-eastern Asia\, has arrived in Oregon. With EAB comes an urgent challenge for our forests\, city canopies\, and the communities that rely on them. This month's Forest Pub invites you to a timely conversation about the tiny insect causing major devastation to ash trees across North America\, what its presence means for the future of our regional landscapes and forests\, and what Oregonians are doing to save our ash. \nSpeakers: \n\nGlenn Howe is a forest geneticist and former Director of the Pacific Northwest Tree Improvement Research Cooperative at Oregon State University. His research focuses on ecological genetics and breeding of forest trees\, forest tree genomics\, and the effects of climate change on Pacific Northwest trees. Recently\, he's begun working with others to develop genetic resistance to emerald ash borer in Oregon ash trees. \nMax Ragozzino is the Oregon Department of Agriculture’s Biological Control Entomologist working on invasive insect pests. His work involves raising and releasing beneficial insects to combat invasive species\, including brown marmorated stink bug\, spotted wing drosophila\, and emerald ash borer. Before coming to Oregon\, Max’s doctoral research focused on emerald ash borer biological control in Virginia and North Carolina. Bringing that expertise to Oregon\, he has worked with federal\, state\, regional and local partners on the emerald ash borer response task force to deploy biological control in every county EAB has been detected in. \nGlenn Ahrens is an Extension Forester at the Oregon State University Extension Service\, serving Clackamas\, Marion\, and Hood River Counties\, and Director of OSU Hardwood Silviculture Cooperative. Glenn’s areas of specialty include forest ecology\, silviculture\, vegetation management\, and hardwood management. His general mission for OSU Extension is to improve our knowledge of forest resources and to help people in sustaining and expanding benefits from trees and forests.

Meet at the park at 5:30 PM. \nAbout the Speaker: David-Paul B. Hedberg is principal historian at Outdoor History Consulting in Portland\, Oregon\, and current chair of the Oregon State Heritage Tree Program. His work focuses on environmental history\, the Pacific Northwest\, and public interpretation. He has developed public history programs for Portland Parks & Recreation\, including From Stumptown to Treetown: A Field Guide for Interpreting Portland's History Through its Heritage Trees\, and served as series producer for Canopy Stories\, a film anthology by NW Documentary about storied trees in Portland. His recent film\, The Seeds of Peace\, follows Hiroshima survivor Hideko Tamura Snider as she distributes seedlings from Hiroshima Survivor Trees across Oregon.
