As of October 9, 2023, Magness Memorial Tree Farm, a 77-acre forest located in Sherwood, Oregon, is open once again to the general public on Mondays between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm.

This scenic woodland has been owned and operated by World Forestry Center since 1977. Donated by Howard and Panzy Magness, the tree farm was originally developed as a demonstration site for woodland owners to showcase forest management and silviculture.

“We know that the Tree Farm is an important regional and community asset,” said Experience Director Tim Hecox. “We’re glad that our organization can once again make it available for public recreation.”

With 2.5 miles of hiking trails, sheltered picnic areas, meadows, streams, and forests, Magness is the perfect place to spend a day in the woods.

Where is Magness located?
Situated at 31195 SW Ladd Hill Road in Sherwood, OR, Magness is just a 45-minute drive from Downtown Portland. World Forestry Center has a staff member on-site during open hours.

Is there a fee associated with visiting Magness?
No. Visiting Magness is free to the public.

Is Magness available for groups and/or special events?
At this time, Magness will be open to the public on Mondays from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm. Due to staffing, we cannot accommodate 1) special events or 2) visits on other days of the week.

What is the status of the trails at Magness?
The Nagle Loop paved trail is open. The Northwest Trail loop along Heater Road is open. It has been modified to better show off White Oak and Madrone groves along that hillside. The South Trail section between Corral Creek Road and Ladd Hill Road is open. The Southeast Trail section on the East side of Ladd Hill Road is closed, with a plan to reopen in the next year. At the request of the Heater family, the Heater trail to the Northeast Heater Grove area is permanently closed.

Are there restrooms at Magness?
Yes, there are two portable restrooms on-site.
