Wildfire & Public Health

We connect public health and forest management professionals to elevate wildfire smoke as a national public health priority and drive proactive forest solutions that safeguard community health.

Wildfire is a public health crisis.

Wildfires are burning hotter, longer, and more frequently than ever before. Record-breaking fire seasons are becoming the norm—even in regions that historically experienced few fires. While wildfire is often viewed as an environmental issue, it is also a growing public health crisis.

Smoke and fire impacts are felt far beyond burn zones, affecting communities across the United States and around the world. The greatest burdens—physical, mental, and economic—are disproportionately carried by vulnerable populations, including rural communities, people experiencing homelessness, farmworkers, those with chronic illness, and communities of color.

We are bringing together public health leaders, forest managers, researchers, and community partners to develop practical strategies that reduce smoke exposure and strengthen community resilience.

Wildfire & Public Health Workshop

In 2025, we brought together public health and forestry leaders to advance wildfire smoke as a national public health priority. This cross-sector collaboration strengthens understanding of wildfire smoke impacts, develops coordinated management strategies, and promotes proactive forest management approaches that reduce wildfire severity while minimizing smoke-related health risks.

The Work Continues

We are continuing this work by strengthening collaboration between public health and forest management leaders to reduce wildfire smoke exposure and protect community health. While eliminating smoke entirely is not possible, coordinated upstream forest management can significantly lower health risks and build public support for lasting solutions.

Engaging the Public about Wildfire

Wildfire | Climate | Forests

Our new permanent immersive theater experience explores how forests, climate change, and wildfire are deeply connected—and what choices we can make today to shape a better future.

Be Wildfire Aware Day

We partner with the Oregon State Fire Marshal and Portland Fire & Rescue for a day-long community preparedness event on our campus aimed to engage the public around wildfire safety.

Wildfire Forest Pubs

Our monthly Forest Pub program features expert speakers discussing a variety of topics, including the intersection of wildfire and our public health, culture, science, and industries.

Virtual Wildfire Programs

We hosted a two-part web series exploring the public health impacts of wildfire smoke, who is most at risk, and what future research is needed to assess the full impact.
