Be Wildfire Aware Weekend at the Discovery Museum

As the climate changes, the risk of wildfire continues to grow. But with a better understanding of fire’s role in ecosystems and advances in wildfire science, we have the opportunity to adapt. Future wildfire-resilient communities will embrace fire’s ecological benefits, design homes and businesses to resist ignition, and be prepared to respond when fires threaten. Adaptation is a shared responsibility.
Join us for Be Wildfire Aware on June 7-8 at the Discovery Museum!
This wildfire preparedness weekend features expert-led workshops, hands-on demonstrations, community partners, and resources highlighting the importance of defensible space. Plus, enjoy free admission all weekend!
Presented in partnership with the Oregon State Fire Marshal and Portland Fire and Rescue. Learn more at worldforestry.org/bewildfireaware.
Prepare your home to be wildfire resilient:
Start at home.
Clean your roof and gutters of debris, and choose fire resistant exterior building materials.
Build a buffer.
Maintain a 5-foot non-combustible buffer around your home. Remove all bark mulch, debris, and plants, along with combustible decorative items and furniture within this area.
Screen time.
Add 1/8” non-combustible metal screening to vents and openings to keep embers out.
Keep it green.
Focus on the landscape space between 5 and 30 feet from your home. Remove all debris, opt for fire-resistant plants, create islands of vegetation, and keep the lawn mowed and well-watered.
Create space.
Keep trees away from buildings and powerlines. Maintain at least 10 feet of space between trees and your home. Prune trees up from the ground and thin them out to create space between trees within the first 100 feet from your home.
Move the pile.
Keep firewood piles and lumber at least 30 feet from structures.
