Lookout Landscape

Coming to the Discovery Museum: August 29, 2026 – February 28, 2027

Included with museum admission.

Lookout Landscape explores the iconic lookout tower, trail culture, and backcountry gear as a means to explore the rich (and sometimes conflicting) relationships between the “working forests” and the people that call them home.

Wildfire, and other landscape disturbances (both manmade and natural) provide a timely context for Borden’s playful, yet critical, approach to environmental understanding.

The wildfire-inspired work will explore diverse cultural narratives of Pacific Northwest forests through installation art, architectural design, material culture, and interdisciplinary science- communication at the intersection of culture and forest ecology.

Lookout Landscape features the work of David Buckley Borden and his interdisciplinary collaborative team of scientists, artists, and designers. Partners include: World Forestry Center, Center for the Future of Forests and Society at Oregon State University’s College of Forestry, Fuller Initiative for Productive Landscapes, HJ Andrews Experimental Forest LTER program, Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts (PRAx), and the Spring Creek Project.

The Big League Smoke stool features a beautiful fire-crew rendering by Kennedy Rauh and a colorful underside that casts an eerie orange glow that is reminiscent of a dangerous smoke filled atmosphere. Collaborators: David Buckley Borden and Kennedy Rauh.

Folding Tabletop Map (in camp-ready fashion), etched wood, upcycled aluminum cooler-stand, canvas, lasers, 22 x 22 x 30 inches, 2023. Collaborators: Rachel Benbrook, David Buckley Borden, and Asa DeWitt.

Featured image at the top of webpage: Wood shed installation, cheap lumber, split firewood, haz-mat signs, primer, acrylic paint, and assorted hardware, 44” x 48” x 64”, 2022. Collaborators: David Buckley Borden, Hannah Chapin, Kennedy Rauh, Nancy Silvers, and Ian Escher Vierck.
